Recombinant Media Labs
RML is an immersive media research, development, and presentation space. They explore the emerging medium of “spatial media synthesis”, the merging of surround sound and surround video, and their placement in space. Their current incarnation is a 10-screen, 360-degree, surround cinema space with full surround sound capabilities.
I met Naut Humon, the legendary founder of RML and head of A&R for Asphodel records when I returned to the Bay Area in 2004. At the time Recombinant Media Labs was a concept centered around an immersive black box that was in early stages of construction at the Aphodel records HQ. I started working with the group developing audio spatialization tools. Before long I was deeply involved in designing and developing the immersive audio-visual media systems. While at RML I produced residencies, installations, and events for artist such as Ryoji Ikeda, Ryoichi Kurokawa, Semiconductor, Alva Noto and Blixa Bargeld (ANBB), Yasunao Tone (fluxus), Kangding Ray (David Letellier), Biosphere, Pan Sonic, Richard Devine, Florian Hecker, Speedy J, Thomas Brinkmann, Skoltz_Kolgen, Morton Subotnick, Curtis Roads, Thomas Köner, Jean Jaques Perry, and Jarboe.
In addition to developing the permanent production facility, I helped to design & the develop the touring production prototype and forge the ongoing partnership with Gray Area Foundation.
